A six year-old domestic queen showing anorexia for the last 2 days and hypothermia was presented to the small animal clinic of FMV-UdM. The physical exam reveal enlarged submandibular and prescapular lymph nodes and a small nodule of about 10 millimeter in diameter and 4-5 millimeter thick located in the ventral cervical region. Microscopic examination of the aspirated material from this nodule reveal numerous round individual structures measuring about 40-100 microns in diameter. These structures possess a thick transparent capsule and a highly basophilic central nucleus with a very thick nuclear membrane. Besides there is also a high number of macrophages. The submandibular lymph node aspirate show the same structures. The final diagnosis is a granulomatous inflammation due to Cryptococcus neoformans. |
