Fungal Keratouveitis in a Mare

An 11 year-old pregnant Quarter Horse mare showing pain in the right eye was presented to the Large Animal Clinic of UdM. The ophtalmic examination reveals a corneal oedema as well as new vascularization. It was also possibe to see a whitish substance in the ventral portion of the anterior chamber. Cytologic examination of the aqueous humor reveals an increase in the amount of proteins as well as in the number of leucocytes. The principal cells were neutrophils. It is also possible to see narrow structures of about 1 micrometer width and 40-200 micrometers long possessing septums and junctions. Mycologic examination for fungus yield negative result. Final diagnosis was suppurative inflammation due to fungal infection.
