Morphology: red blood cells in late maturation (arrow), these cells have a larger diameter than mature red blood cells, all having a lightly basophilic color. The polychromatophilic red blood cells are observed after staining with Romanowsky (Wright-Giemsa, Diff-Quik®) stain. The reticulocyte is the same cell but observed after staining with new methylene blue. In the case of anemia, the presence of polychromatophilic red blood cells in the blood smear is an indicator of some level of regeneration.
