Etiology: on photomicroscopy, the spherocyte is round, darker than a normal red blood cell and devoid of pale center (arrow). This form result from the passage of an erythrocyte covered with antibodies in the reticulo-endothelial system. Thus, it is a product of a partially phagocytosed erythrocyte. The presence of spherocytes is thus nearby an indicator of the presence of immune mediated hemolytic anemia. The spherocytes are also observed in the anemia caused by oxidizing agent or resulting from blood transfusion.
