Hepatic Lipidosis

Wright's stain, 400x

In hepatic lipidosis, the cytoplasm of hepatocytes appears to be filled with clear vacuoles because the lipids contained in the vacuoles do not stain with routine staining techniques (ie. Wright's stain). The number of vacuoles will vary with the severity of the lipidosis. Vacuoles are often seen extracellularly as well. Eventually, the accumulation of lipids will cause distension of the hepatocytes and cellular degeneration. Click here in order to observe normal hepatocytes.
