Histoplasmosis is often a subclinical infection, however when associated with clinical symptoms, a respiratory infection as well as a systemic infection can be observed, however, the gastro-intestinal tract can be the primary site of infection in certain cases. Many species are susceptible to infection by this organism. This microphotograph shows a macrophage filled with Histoplasma capsulatum in yeast form
