Artefact: Stain Precipitate

Wright's stain, 500x

Stain precipitate is a frequent contaminant of blood smear preparations. When precipitate is abundant, the stain should be checked and filtered or changed, if necessary. Generally, it is easy to distinguish between more amorphous precipitate and microorganisms such as cocci: the latter will possess a more discernible and uniform round shape, and tend to cluster at least in pairs or form chains.
