Dirofilaria immitis

This dog suffers from microfilaremia associated with Dirofilaria immitis, the causative agent ofcanine heartworm disease. When microfilariae are present in the bloodstream, they can be found in blood smears. Morphologically, microfilariae of this species are hard to distinguish from Dipetalonema reconditum.
