Urine sediment, 400x

Calcium oxalate dihydrate crystals are normally found in the urine sediment in small quantities. They are small square crystals with an "x" in their center. Sometimes, they have an envelope appearance, and may even be cuboidal or rectangular with slightly rounded corners (without inner markings such as an "x"). Urolithiasis associated with  these crystals will  be suspected  when the crystals are found in large quantities in  the presence of acidic urine and clinical signs of urolithiasis. note that in general, the absence of crystalluria does not necessarily exclude a diagnosis of urolithiasis. This applies to any type of crystal formation.
