Erythrocytes and leukocytes, 400x

Both a leukocyte (black arrow) and an erythrocyte (red arrow) can be seen in this field. Due to its biconcave form, the center of the erythrocyte is darker. The leukocytes have a granular appearance due to the texture of their cytoplasm and nucleus. Also note that the leukocyte in this field is slightly larger than the red blood cell . When the urine is obtained by free catch, it is acceptable to have up to five red or white blood cells per microscopic field at 400x magnification. In intact bitches, up to seven leucocytes per 400x field may be seen.
