Objective : this project aims to promote the judicious* and effective use of drugs on farms to address specific needs of the industry (see below), especially on Quebec farms by following the CQATM program, through the preparation of a detailed prescription of antimicrobial agents: reason for use, dose, route of administration, frequency and withdrawal period.
Industrial requests:
The judicious use* must allow the achievement of a high treatment efficiency in order to reduce production costs, with no public health risk, by limiting the emergence of antibiotic-resistance and developing an accompaniment service for veterinary prescribers.

Composed of veterinarian prescribers and validators, producers, FPPQ representatives for the CQATM program and the RCMS-CQA team, it has a key role within the CQATM approach. It is focused on the judicious use of drugs and antibiotics. Giving advices when the Cgfarad does not have a determined MRL (zero tolerance!). It is a fast and efficient method of information sharing.

Notice period of withdrawal and irregularities
The database software delivers to each CQATM folder, report of irregularity about off-label treatments for which Cgfarad or other institutions data are not available. This report is checked by the CQATM veterinarian who may deem it necessary to send a notice to the prescriber concerning a withdrawal time or an irregularity in the treatment.

Database and queries on the use of veterinary medicines in Quebec pig farms (BDUMVEQ)
Computer tools developed by RCMS since the end of 2008 for the surveillance of drug prescriptions in pig production under the CQATM program.
Queries within this database serve as basis to elaborate reports on drug prescription profiles.
This accompaniment service concern farms applying the Canadian Quality Assurance program (CQATM), by proposing recommendations on dosages and withdrawal times to use, based on scientific data of main products used in pig farms. It provides training tools and / or information, through Animal Industry Veterinarians Association meetings, in scientific publications as well as on the web site, and for producers, at annual pork Symposium, pork congress. In addition, a biannual electronic publication describes the advancement of research within the RCMS-NSERC.
This part of the project should allow the issue of recommendations more scientifically validated to pharmaco-therapeutical regimes commonly used in Quebec and Canada in pig farms, in order to increase judicious use of antimicrobials in regard to the treatment efficiency, zootechnical performance and absence of detectable residues in meat. An approach of recognition of the RCMS developed expertise by Health Canada/Canadian Food Inspection Agency, is considered.
