Epidemiology and Surveillance Section
Terrestrial Animal Division
Canadian Food Inspection Agency
André Vallières obtained his Doctorate of Veterinary Medecine in 1985 (Université de Montréal). After three years in mixed private practice, he joined Agriculture Canada (1988). He worked for three years with the Canadian Meat Hygiene Program and moved to the Animal Health Division in 1992. From 1992 to 2005, he managed a team of field veterinarians and technicians and was responsible for the implementation of various national surveillance and disease control programs (regulated diseases such as tuberculosis, brucellosis, rabies, anthrax, etc.) as well as import/export programs in the province of Quebec. During that period, he was a member of the Foreign Animal Diseases (FAD) emergency team and had many responsibilities related to the detection and control of FAD outbreaks in Canada (e.g. Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (British Columbia 2004), Salmonella enteritidis (Quebec 1996)). He led the development of joint federal-provincial animal diseases emergency and contingency plans and designed many disease outbreak simulations. He also participated in FAD control activities in the United Kingdom (Foot and Mouth Disease 2001) and the Netherlands (Classical Swine Fever 1997). He completed a Master of Veterinary Epidemiology in 1993 (Université de Montréal).
In 2005, Dr Vallières joined the Epidemiology and Surveillance Section of the Terrestrial Animal Division (Canadian Food Inspection Agency - which is the veterinary authority in Canada). He was a lead in the design and implementation of the Canadian Notifiable Avian Influenza Surveillance System (CanNAISS) that was launched in 2008. He is also the Canadian point of contact for the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and is responsible for collecting information about nationally reportable and notifiable animal diseases and reporting to international organizations.
