Prospectus 2012-2017
A new Partnership for a Concerted Research

The Canadian dairy industry is confronted with significant issues that must be overcome to ensure its financial and environmental sustainability. The expansion and economic viability of dairy production will depend on the development and adoption of new knowledge and innovative technologies designed to enhance milk quality and preserve the extensive availability of food products from this sector.
In order to meet these challenges, the new research program of the CBMRN will offer innovative science-based solutions that will directly impact the welfare of dairy cows and the profitability of milk production, and provide answers to numerous environmental and social responsibilities.  The Network will serve as both the generator and promoter of new knowledge and technologies that will enable the dairy industry to:
  • Decrease the national average milk somatic cell counts to 200,000 cells/mL to reduce the average cost of production and to increase cheese yields and the shelf life of milk;
  • Reduce by 10% the losses caused by early culling of cows due to mastitis;
  • Optimize best management practices and the use of antibiotics to improve the health and welfare of animals while facilitating risk control;
  • Characterize control points on the farm that will help dairy producers in maintaining the safety of milk produced in Canada and protect the public health.
The research activities of the CBMRN will focus on three major themes:
  • Pathogens
  • Animal
  • Environment
and, each of which will deal with:
I)  Understanding the fundamental mechanisms that enable pathogens to remain in the cow’s environment, and
II)The development of best management practices for the control of these pathogens.

Training and Knowledge Transfer

The new vision of the CBMRN also includes training of highly qualified scientific personnel who will provide a positive contribution to the Canadian economy.  And of course, it will build on the reputation that the Network has earned and continue to pursue its mission of transferring as quickly as possible its research results to end users with the help of dairy practitioners, training tools, conferences, its Web site and the TACTIC Udder Health Veterinary Kit.
