Saline test

After noticing the macroscopic appearance of the blood in the tube submitted for the CBC analysis, a saline test was done. The goal of this test it to confirm the presence of autoagglutination by mixing a drop of non-coagulated blood with one drop of saline, and placing it on a slide, coverslipping it, and examining it under a microscope. If the red blood cells remain clumped, autoagglutination is confirmed and the result is a positive test. If the red blood cells seperate from each other then clumping or stacking of red cells is confirmed to be a rouleaux phenomenon (a plasma protein effect removed by plasma dilution ) and the result is a   negative test .
